We lovingly celebrate the life of Charlotte Y. Gatien, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Charlotte’s heart was as big as her love for her family, which she cherished above all. She was the beloved wife of Gordon J. Gatien, whom she married on June 6, 1959, in Brilliant, OH. Together, they built a life filled with love and devotion until Gordon’s passing in 1992.
Charlotte’s love for her family extended to her children: Shirley Byal (Steve), Janet Friemoth (Rick), Gordon Gatien (Victoria), and Renee DeRosa (Mark), as well as her proud role as grandmother to Megan Lamkin (Russ), Matthew Byal (Zea Miller), Jonathan Byal, Tiffany Sammons (Billy Brown), Ally Gatien, Joseph Gatien (Emmy), and Mindy Hensel (Ben). She also treasured being a great-grandmother to Rowan Sammons, Griffin Hensel, Quinlyn Hensel, and Beckett Hensel. A loving sister, Charlotte is also fondly remembered by her sister Denise Lewis, and her sisters-in-law Joy Lewis and Nancy Lewis.
Though time and distance separated her from many of Gordon’s family members in later years, she always carried a special place in her heart for them: Leonard Gatien (Pam), Lenore Allard, Janet Price (Elvin), Faye Williams (Jay), and Francis Gatien (Donna—AKA “Her Buddy”).
Charlotte’s love for her family, however, was not bound by blood alone. She was a tender aunt, cousin, and friend to so many, with bonds that spanned generations and hearts alike. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys and James Lewis, as well as her siblings—Gloria L. Adams, Donn C. Lewis, Dolores J. (Jimmie) Mayle, John L. Lewis, William O. Lewis, and Richard B. Lewis—and the infant son she carried in her heart, James Gordon Gatien.
A graduate of Brilliant High School, Charlotte was a cheerleader and majorette, with a spirit full of energy and enthusiasm. She spent 29 years in the financial industry, retiring from Liberty National Bank. Throughout her life, she devoted time to her community, serving as treasurer of the Culture Club, volunteering at Hardin Memorial Hospital, and lending a hand with the Mistletoe Ball Committee. Charlotte’s faith was central to her, and she was a long-time member of the Immaculate Conception Church choir, where her voice brought comfort and joy to many.
Charlotte was an accomplished painter who began honing her craft in her teenage years, and her artwork continues to be cherished by family and friends. A lifelong lover of reading, singing, swimming, and puzzles, she also enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family. She was known for her wonderful cooking and baking, and her home was always filled with warmth and love, especially during family gatherings and holidays, which she held dear. Charlotte made sure to nurture strong family bonds and relationships, leaving a legacy of deep love, faith, and connection that will carry on for generations.
After a courageous and determined battle, Charlotte passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025. Her loss will be profoundly felt by all who knew her. However, her spirit, love, and enduring legacy will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends for many years to come.
