Funeral services for Mary K. Carey will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 27, 2017 at The Hepburn United Methodist Church with Pastors Cal Waugh and Denny Livingston officiating. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday February 26, 2017 at The Price-McElroy Funeral Home in Kenton from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Mary K. Carey passed away at her residence on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. She was born in Hardin County to Herbert and Opal (Dally) Holland on September 4, 1920. She grew up near Hepburn and attended the Hepburn United Methodist Church for 89 years.  She married James Russell Carey on February 12, 1944 who preceded her in death.

She was a patient and loving mother of Marcia Ann Dean (Richard) of Kenton, Linda Jane VanDyck (Errol) of La Rue and James M. Carey of La Rue.

She had one granddaughter Meredith Creps (Ryan) of La Rue and two great grandsons Owen and Mitchell Creps. And a loving sister to Reba Coats of Kenton.

She was preceded in death by a sister; Dorothy Stoughton and two brothers; Ray Holland and Keith Holland.

She graduated from Kenton High School in 1937 at the age of 16 and attended Bowling Green St. University for 2 years before starting her teaching career.  She graduated with honors from Ohio Northern University after having a family and going summers and nights.

She was a loving and caring teacher for 35 years. She began her career in Kenton at Hardin Central and Espy Schools and taught most of her career at La Rue Elementary / Elgin West Elementary.

She was a member of the SSH Club (a local mother's club), the Hobby Club of Hepburn, the Concerned Citizens of Central Ohio and the Retired Dodds Sisters Teachers Assoc.

She enjoyed traveling.  She and her husband traveled to all fifty states in the United States and also enjoyed a special trip to Ireland with her son. Her second home was Paradise, MI.  Whe loved being there fishing with her family and had many friends there. She also had a great love of reading.  If she wasn’t busy working, helping on the farm or taking care of her family she was reading.

She loved and respected her family: brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Also her friends and co workers and especially her lifelong friends, The Dodds Girls, Mary, Catherine and Ruth, Agnes Dunson and Millie Wenig.

Memorials may be made the  Hepburn United Methodist Church.
