Services for John R. "J.R." Hickel will be held at 11:00 Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Price-McElroy Funeral Home in Kenton with Pastor Mike Armentrout officiating. Burial will follow at Grove Cemetery with Military graveside rites by Amvets Post 1994. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.
He died at 6:45 am on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Lima Memorial Hospital. He was born on December 21, 1935 in Belle Center to the late Herbert and Bernice (Poling) Hickel. He married Marilyn Sue Reed and they later divorced.
Surviving are 2 sons John Robert Hickel of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Donald Herbert Hickel of Kenton; and Mary Margaret Richards of Kenton.
He was preceded in death by a sister Carleen Reth.
He served in the U.S. Army for 2 years and retired as a lieutenant from the Kenton Police Department after 31 years. He spent the next 27 years as a co-owner of Thomas Family Tavern.
J.R. was a 1955 graduate of Kenton High School.  He was a member of the Kenton Elks Lodge #157 and Kenton Moose Family Center #428.
